In our own words
As gateway to Eastern Europe, Vienna was the scene of epic battles between Christians and Muslims, as Ottoman Turks besieged the city. As musical capital, Vienna was home to Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Sigmund Freud and Gustav Klimt made Vienna the birthplace of "modernity" around 1900. The city is sometimes described as one of the grandest, and at the same time most compact, capital cities in Europe. It certainly is among the oldest. Founded 500 BC, the city originally was a Celtic settlement. In 15 BC, it became a Roman frontier city called Vindobona, guarding the Roman Empire against Germanic tribes to the north. During the Middle Ages, Vienna was home to the Babenberg Dynasty and then became residence city of the Habsburgs from where the city eventually grew to the capital of the Holy Roman Empire. Finally, after the World Wars, Vienna found itself in a new role, serving as bridge and gateway between the West and the Communist countries of Eastern Europe. It became a primary hub for espionage, smuggling activities and later drug trafficking.
Today, Vienna is a city that tries to be both, incredibly antiquated and modern. Sky-scraping glass and steel domes stand next to medieval bastions and monuments of Gothic architecture. Anachronisms abound, from antique decorations in otherwise ultra-modern buildings to forgotten catacombs beneath bank vaults and subway tunnels. Honest-to-goodness castles and imperial palaces still exist and stand side by side with ancient cathedrals, shopping malls and twenty-first century office buildings. Austria's neutrality, its EU membership, banking secrecy, business tradition, affluence, multilingualism, plurality of cultures make it incredible attractive for multinationals and criminals alike. These developments of the recent decades have brought the city full circle to its earlier history -- and its renewed position not only as a supra-regional but also as an international center.
